There is no shortage of information regarding the benefits of meditation. We talk about posture, breathing, slowing down the mind when we want to develop a meditation practice, but where we should meditate is often overlooked.
One of the keys to developing a disciplined meditation practice and tending to your inner growth is consistency of location. When we designate a specific area to a specific task, we are creating an anchor in our mind that this location has a purpose. It makes us feel a certain way and only certain tasks and things are done in that area.
Think about it. We have specific areas in our home pre-designated for specific things. When we walk in our kitchen, we think of eating. When we enter our bedroom we think of sleep and when we walk into our mindfulness space, we think about relaxing and going within.
So when we decide we want to start a meditation practice, it’s imperative we consciously take the time to pick the perfect space in our home that will promote relaxation and calmness.
A dedicated space to meditation begins to collect your energy, vibrations and intentions. Your meditation area will be your own personal place to feel safe, inspired and comfortable. It becomes a personal sanctuary and a natural extension of you.
What is a Meditation Altar?
Meditation Altars are a specific location, within your home, where you designate for your own sacred space for practicing religion, prayer, spirituality, yoga or meditation. This area is going to be infused with your energy and higher intentions so you will be uplifted every time you are in its presence.
Think of an altar as a physical manifestation of your inner spiritual landscape. You want it to be symbolic, comfortable and a depiction of what you believe.
Whether you’re meditating, praying, practicing kriya yoga or taking a moment to connect with yourself, an altar is your personal space that reflects back your inner energy and love.
Here are 4 Steps to Creating Your Own Personal Space:
1. Pick a Location
You want to create a special space for the altar to exist. Ideally it will be somewhere quiet and private. This can be an entire room or a small table in a room that you feel comfortable in. But be very clear its in an area of your home that you feel calm, comfortable and relaxed. This is important because you are committing yourself to going deep within, and you can only do that if you feel calm, safe and relaxed.
You’ll need a meditation seat, which could be a pillow, zafu or blanket. If sitting on the floor isn’t available to you, a comfortable chair is fine. Keep any additional props that help you get as comfortable as possible.
2. Clear the Space
Before you start your meditation practice, make sure you clean the area. If you are a Reiki practitioner, you can Reiki the area. If not, you can get some Smudging Sage or Incense to clear out the negative and stagnant energy in that area. Clear and consecrate a dedicated area of your home such as a room, a corner, a table, or the shelf of a bookcase that will be solely used for this spiritual purpose.
The direction of your altar is important for some. Do you plan to meditate in the morning and want to face the morning sun? Do you want to meditate in the evening and face the Western sky? Intuitively decide which direction would be the best for you.
3. Picking Sacred Items For Your Altar
This is where your own uniqueness and creativity comes in. There is no wrong things to put on your altar, so have fun with this! The objects themselves are not important so long as they uplift your mind, touch your heart and have significance to you. They can be feathers, shells, crystals, photographs, journals, malas, dieties, quotes, etc.
Remember, its important not to create clutter with too much stuff. Clutter creates heaviness and stagnancy. This goes against the whole idea of a meditation area being light, uplifting and inviting.
It’s important to keep your altar clean. If you find over a period of time you are resisting going to your meditation space, make sure you clean up the space energetically and physically get rid of anything that might not uplift you anymore. Don’t allow dust to cover it. Keep your items clean. You might choose to burn sage periodically to keep the energy fresh. Dedicating that space solely to spirit is a powerful tool to keep YOU reminded to keep your spirit clean too. If you are neglecting your altar, ask yourself if you are neglecting your spiritual life.
